Ariel Hsing, Lily Zhang, Erica Wu & Timothy Wang Head to London
(April 21, 2012) – US table tennis fans watched history unfold this past weekend in Cary, North Carolina, where Americans, Ariel Hsing (CA), Lily Zhang (CA), Erica Wu (CA) and Timothy Wang (TX) earned places on the 2012 US Olympic Team headed to London. The experience will be a first for all four, who are all under the age of 21.
Hsing, 16, secured her Olympic berth in the first round of trials, where she went undefeated, while Zhang, 15, won the second round. As a result, the US women also qualified to compete in the Olympic Teams event, opening up a spot for Wu, also 15. In the men’s event, there was only one spot left for the US, after Canadians Andre Ho and Pierre-Luc Hinse won the first two positions. As a result, the semi-final match of the final round between Timothy Wang and fellow American Barney Reed became the deciding match for the last spot to London. A tough match, but Wang pulled through to clinch the final spot in the end.
“It’s an exciting time for table tennis in the US. This year, a new generation of young table tennis players will represent the United States at the 2012 London Olympics and it’s very likely that their achievements will pave the way for the sport’s success in the future” states Richard Lee, President of JOOLA North America.
